The model for our work is Holy Cross School in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown), South Africa, a place where the demand for rigorous primary education is great but the supply is strikingly lacking. The school is a continuation of the Order of the Holy Cross’s legacy in education, which includes schools reaching out to the disadvantaged in both the United States and Liberia. The Order is an Anglican Benedictine order of monks founded in 1884 by Fr. James Otis Sargent Huntington. Father Huntington is the source of the quotation that inspired our name: “Love must act as light must shine forth and fire must burn,” which is included in the Order’s Rule.
